The Gazette – 1909
On the 9th of February the death angel took from our circle of friends, Brother A. S. Coplen and wafted his spirit from the lowly earth to the vaulted skies.
Brother Coplen was born in Macon County, Ala., July 20, 1854 – Age 52 years, 6 months and 19 days. He came to Louisiana in 1865 and joined the Baptist church at Shiloh, La., at the age of eighteen.
United in the holy bonds of wedlock to Miss Annie Glass Jan 21, 1887.
His beloved wife is bereft of a noble, dutiful and affectionate husband, friends are bereft of a kind hearted faithful friend, the state is bereft of a liberty loving true citizen, and the church of the living God is bereft of a consecrated sincere God fearing Christian.
“He continued steadfastly in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, lived soberly and righteously and Godly in this present world.
He believed man’s whole duty was to become like unto God.
He gave living sacrifice to the honor and glory of his family, his friend, his state and church.
He never failed to show a tribute of love to his wife, relatives and friends.
A more devoted husband never lived, he always manifested a true husband’s love and tenderness.
He never grew weary in well doing.
He was strong in his intellectual power, pure and tender, loving of heart, a useful citizen, a Christian, the marvel of his community.
We thank God for the life and record of such noble character, for what he was, for what he did and we most earnestly pray that we may strive to imitate his virtues and leave behind us a record worthy of Christian citizenship – his life was an inspiration and memory a benediction. May God feed the heartbroken wife with abundance of his spiritual love and tenderly watch over and protect her in the performance of her entire duties of life.
God grant that the relatives and friends of Bro. Coplen may be inspired by divine wisdom to live this life well.
We extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy to the entire bereaved family and friends of Bro. Coplen.
A sincere, sad-hearted Friend.
