Denied the Right to Vote

The Gazette
June 8, 1898

There are a number of persons in this parish who cannot read and write, and who do not own $300 worth of property. According to the new constitution of Louisiana such persons will be denied the right to vote unless they register before September 1, 1898, under the special act for the registration of this class of people, which relates that they were entitled to vote on January 1, 1867, or is the son or grandson of such voter. If such voters fail to register, before September 1st, it will then be too late. Act accordingly.
