One of my young friends, who I’ve been writing about who checks on me, asked me to go see the movie, “The Last Ounce of Courage”. Babs Bryan was the young lady who took me to lunch and the movie. If you have not seen this movie, I would certainly recommend it. It is about losing our freedoms. I have been thinking about this for a while – but I don’t know what an old 94 year old woman can do about it – except to vote – and then it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I can only tell you about what has happened to our country since WWII. Up until 19 years of age I was in school and we always said The Pledge (under God) and never even thought of it being controversial. We met at the flag pole and sang our national anthem and in the auditorium we had prayer at meetings and ballgames. Our husbands, fathers, and brothers went off to World War II to protect our freedoms. Now it is not the American – Land of the FREE – that it once was. WE can’t use God’s name in graduation exercises – no plaques with “In God We Trust” or a cross on any government building. They are not government buildings – they are the people’s buildings. Whose tax money was used to build it then? They are ours! No crosses on them either. I have several “cross” necklaces that I wear and so far they have not been confiscated. Our children cannot attend the school that they want to or in their neighborhood. They have to be bused miles away just to satisfy some stupid law taking away our freedom. It’s not the proper thing to say “Merry Christmas”. You should say “Happy Holidays”. Well, thank you, Mr. Government. I will say “Merry Christmas” to whom and when I choose. Also nativity scenes are not allowed in public places – whose places are these? Ours and we should be able to display our belief in God wherever we choose. There is one freedom that I have rumblings about – but so far the government has not tried it – and that is Gun Control. I realize some people should not be allowed guns – but when they try to take control of our guns – what do you think some of us “rednecks” in Louisiana are going to do? I don’t even want to think about it. There are probably other freedoms that I haven’t mentioned. There are too many regulations that are necessary – like trying to open a new business – it isn’t worth all the paper work and regulations that one has to go through.
I realize that perhaps we are the most “free” people in the world – but are we going to be able to keep it that way peacefully? In the movie it only took one man to start his mission to peacefully do what he thought was right. Are we sitting on our hands and letting them take God out of our country – or will one person maybe step up and say “America is truly FREE!”. I pray to God that we will remain “America, the land of the FREE”!
