Farmerville High Boxing Team To Meet Homer Here

The Gazette
February 8, 1939

The Farmerville High school boxers will meet the Homer Pelicans here Friday night in the local gym. The fights will feature such local stars as “Red” Holloway, Ben Davis, Jimmie Brasher, Pete Adkins and James Brasher.

There is almost a certainty of twelve matches. The Homer stars that are back this year and will be matched in the next fight will be Bridwell in the 112 lb. division, Limerly in the 118 lb. division and Palmer in the 135 lb. class.

Thus far the local mittmen have lost only one engagement inside their own squared circle, but at least a tough fight is expected from the Homer rivals.

Following the engagement with Homer, the fight fans of this section will be treated to two more feature fights of the season before the Tournament, with Bastrop and Neville respectively on the 17th and 24th. Each will furnish several stars against our best and will probably match every weight class.

The tournament coming on the 3rd and 4th March will be one of the best sports engagements of recent years. Sixteen teams have been invited and are expected to attend. It is assured that the local fans will be treated to as much boxing as anyone desires in the two days of the tournament.

All local business men and patrons of the local school are urged to cooperate in this venture of bringing surrounding sport fans to partake of the hospitality and sportsmanship that prevails here. Treat them as courteously as in the past and let them spend their money with local business houses.
