This past week started off with a bang – UBI was at long last dead and his threats of terror to our country would be no more. We thank President Bush for his persistence in keeping our country safe, Pres. Obama for being able to make the “gutsy” call for action, special thanks to our CIA for 9 1/2 years for, painstakingly, putting small bits and pieces of information together, and an extra special thanks to those courageous Navy Seals who risked their lives to accomplish this mission. I heard somewhere that all this could only have been done with the aid of “Devine Intelligence”. It’s wonderful to live in a Christian nation that still believes in miracles.
The park in the little village of Spearsville is getting a facelift; the grass has been removed that was growing on the track and the track has been resurfaced. It, not only looks much better, but will be safer for we will no longer have cracks that could trip the walkers, and the strollers will be much easier to push. Bobby Walton has done a great job; out hats are off to him for being so diligent in his work and to Mayor Bob Shoemaker and the aldermen for funding this project that is making our park so pretty!!!
If you are 60 or older and haven’t given the Spearville Dining Site a try. I advise you to do so for you are certainly missing a good meal and lots of fun. Each week we are adding new people; this past week was Imogene Bennett and Betty Rockett. This makes five communities that are represented, making it possible for us to keep up with the happenings across this little sliver of the parish. Since we all grew up in the same era, many were classmates, a lot of the experiences were shared, making the stories much more interesting and funnier. Come join us. We need you and you need us to make your days complete.
Floy Rea’s family made Mother’s Day a two-day event. Sharon and Dale Liner came on Saturday for a visit and brought lunch; Jan and Ski Wawrzynizk came for church on Sunday and brought lunch as well. Of course, being the “second Mom”. I was included for each meal and visit as well. After lunch we took Jan up to see the new pictures in our Little Yellow House. As we looked we kept thinking of veterans that needed to be added. If you have a family member in this category, please get the picture to one of the committee members for we still have lots of space to fill for our photo gallery to be complete.
Bro. James and Shirley’s family came for a Saturday get-together and Jan, their daughter, stayed over for Sunday. The dressing was made by Bro. James and everything else was up to Jan. It was a great meal and wonderful visit. There’s nothing better than having the kids home.
Mother’s Day is always a special day at our church; it is Dedication Day for the new babies. We’ve only had one this year and that is Gabrielle Stone Harrison. She was just precious and looked like a doll, all dressed in pink. Bro. James was even able to get her to hold her new little Bible for the picture. Gabrielle’s great-grandmother, Ann Stone-Heard voiced the prayer, asking God to bless her throughout her life and to bless her parents as they bring her up according to God’s Word. Her Aunt Beverly and cousin Nathan, from El Dorado, were down for this special ocassion.
Mary Gene Rhodes had, as guests, Beth Lawson, Vergil Rhodes (Buddy) and Susan, his wife. Donna Thomas, was a guest of Curtis and Melissa Thomas.
Maurene Barron was recognized as the oldest mother; she is a beautiful lady and quite youthful at 98; always being attentively cared for by her three adult children, Susan, Joye, Gene and their spouses. Bookmarkers and cloth calendars were given to all the mothers.
Joan Smith did a beautiful job with our special music. She sang “Father Along” and played the piano, as well. She is so talented and so willing to share her talent for our enjoyment.
Notes from Mrs. Oda: It was a long week-end in Houston with my family. I had a great time celebrating my great grandson’s birthday, 2 year old Geoffery Wentzel. Watching him say “Meme”, watching him play with his cars and balls and hearing him laughing and enjoying the water slip and slide was all wonderful moments.
Thought for the Day
I am proud to be from the South – where tea is sweet and accents are sweeter; summer starts in April; front porches are wide and words are long; macaroni and cheese is a vegetable; pecan pie is a staple; ya’ll is the only proper pronoun; chicken is fried and biscuits come w/gravy; everything is darling and someone is always getting t…heir heart blessed! How about you?
